Dear Mitchell Families and Community, 

Thanks to the students, staff and parents at Mitchell who have made this place feel like home to me! I look forward to returning to Mitchell after a refreshing summer filled with family, music and nature. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have!

Performances: Performances are designed to be an authentic demonstration of music learning and will align with and enhance JeffCo and Colorado State music standards.

What will students learn in music class? 

In my classroom, you will see students engaging in a variety of playful and joyful music-making, all of which is designed to meet district and state curricular standards. In order to reach a variety of interests and learning styles, I blend Dalcroze, Orff and Kodály methodologies into my lessons. On any given day, students might be participating in creative movement, dance, singing, games, instruments, music literacy, music creation, music appreciation, music technology and more. Instruments you might hear in class include drums, percussion instruments, ukuleles, recorders, xylophones and more. Students will learn how to read rhythms, notes and solfège in order to prepare them for future musical opportunities.

It is my goal that students will be able to discover what they love about music making!

Mr. McGarry’s Bio

I have been involved in music for most of my life, starting with piano lessons at a young age and then band and choir in my public school music programs. Along the way, I learned how to play guitar, sing songs and became a lifelong folkie. A mentor of mine told me that this mashup of skills positioned me well to become an elementary school music teacher. I received my Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2007. I moved to Colorado upon graduation and began my first teaching jobs at Adams-12 and Swallow Hill Music (a local non-profit organization.) In 2008, I earned my Level I Certificate in Orff Methodology. In 2024, I completed my Masters of Music Education (Kodály emphasis) at Colorado State University. This summer, I had the opportunity to study Dalcroze-Eurhythmics at Anderson University in Indiana. I am currently working towards certification from the American Eurhythmics Society.  

When not at school, you can find me with my wife Laura and my ten year old daughter Eliza (starting fifth grade at Foster PK-8!). You might also find me trying to squeeze in some practice time on my guitar, ukulele or roller skates.
