  • The appearance of students shall not be disruptive to the educational process or constitute a health or safety hazard.
  • The area between the armpit and the bottom of the outfit should be covered. Tops need to have sleeves/straps.
  • Caps, bandanas and hats will not be worn in the building (unless for medical/religious reasons).
  • Sunglasses may be worn outside only.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Clothing that is imprinted with obscene language, conveys a double meaning, promotes drugs or alcohol, or includes hate speech, is not permitted.
  • Underwear should not be seen at any time when the student is participating in normal daily activities, such as walking, sitting or bending over.
  • Roller tennis shoes and high heels are not allowed during the school day.

Dressed for the Weather

At Mitchell, our community values a healthy, active lifestyle as well as access to outdoor play as much as possible. Students will go outside every day unless noted by the office as an inside day.

We ask that students dress for the weather. Students with no coats will still go outside. Students may be asked to avoid playing in the field if they aren’t wearing proper shoes during snowy days. Students can bring extra clothing or shoes of their own to change into if their clothing or shoes become wet from playing outside.

Safe Body Policy

  • Jeffco hiring practices include screening of potential employees through background checks, fingerprinting with the state, and past experiences to work with children.
    • Appropriate and inappropriate touch at Mitchell
    • 2-finger touch during tag games in PE and recess
    • Ask to give a hug or high five
  • Specifically trained staff to respond to crisis behaviors for students (CPI recertification every 2 years)
  • Students are supervised by adults throughout their day except when using the restroom on their own.
  • Students are specifically taught to be ‘the boss of their own bodies’ each year.
    • This means going to the bathroom on their own and taking care of their own body- respecting the privacy of others in the bathroom. (1 student per stall).
    • Teachers use a sign in/sign out procedure for students using the restroom from the classroom.
    • We keep our privates private- we do not touch our privates outside of the bathroom. It is not ok for others to touch our privates (parents and doctors are ok).
  • All staff are trained annually to recognize behaviors of concern, to recognize the signs of child sexual abuse, and review child abuse (sexual and non) policies.
  • Staff and/or students are encouraged to report concerning behavior at any time. All students are asked to identify a #TrustedAdult whom they can get help from during the day for any reason at school.
    • All reports of any issue involving privates or concerning behavior are followed up with an inquiry with a building administrator and conclude with discipline/repair

Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco

Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.

Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
